In the past decade, Columbia’s Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute has built a powerful engine of neuroscience discovery.
Building upon the foundation laid by Nobel laureates Drs. Eric Kandel and Richard Axel, we have assembled a world-class, interdisciplinary community of neuroscientists, statisticians, engineers, psychologists and scholars from across fields. Together, we are united by a dual commitment: deciphering the mind and brain through foundational science and educating the next generation of neuroscientists.
How do we learn, move, grow, remember, make decisions and sense the world around us?
The questions we ask—and the answers we find—speak to some of society’s most urgent challenges: from improving quality of life through research into brain development and neurodegenerative diseases, to understanding and combating malnutrition and eating disorders by decoding taste and appetite, addressing addiction by elucidating the mechanisms of pain, harnessing the power of AI and computational models for discovery, and transforming educational systems by studying learning and memory.
Our 450,000-square-foot research hub at Columbia University, the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, is purpose-built to drive discovery. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and facilities, our 50+ labs and 800+ person research teams are propelling us toward a bright future of impact.
I invite you to learn more about our science and the people leading breakthroughs at the Zuckerman Institute. For every scientist and discovery featured here, there are many more to explore.
While we know our mission is ambitious, we are committed to driving discoveries that will deliver impact well beyond our walls; it is a pleasure to share with you a glimpse into the vibrant world within them. Welcome.
